Emigration 10/08/2005
Will other countries recognise UK civil partnerships as equivalent to a marriage or a civil union in their country?
It seems likely that EU countries that recognise civil unions would recognise a UK civil partnership as equivalent to their own civil union: it is possible that some non-EU countries that recognise civil unions will do so.
Twelve EU countries offer civil unions or marriage to same-sex couples: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Spain,Sweden, United Kingdom.
For further details, see the International page.
As yet, the Equality Network has no definite information on which countries will recognise a UK civil partnership and which will not. We recommend that you make enquiries of a consulate or embassy of the country you intend emigrating to.
